Course Information

ACHSM have developed a short, self-paced online course on Professional and Social Responsibility (PSR). This course relates to competencies within the ACHSM Health Service Management Competency Framework.

This online course demonstrates how and why professional and social responsibility is important for health service managers and leaders. We know that self-awareness can lead to better leadership and those who lead have social responsibilities to their organisation, the community, consumers, and funders. Self-awareness has also been linked to higher overall happiness and personal performance. In this online course, you will learn about developing your self-awareness, how you practice and make decisions ethically, the role of reflection and how you can develop resilience, which are all factors which are necessary to survive in the rapidly changing health environments where health service managers work.

This course consists of 14-20 hours of online learning spread over eight weeks, approx. 2-2.5 hours per week, so that you can learn at your own pace and time.  Learning is organised into four topics which contain high quality content, quality and contemporary reading, and reflection activities to support your learning. In addition, interaction with experienced health services managers will be provided during this online course. An additional two weeks is dedicated to undertaking an assessment. You will apply the knowledge learned throughout the course and interpret and respond to an ethical issue.

This assessment is a compulsory requirement of the ACHSM Certification Program.

Online Learning Module Content

  1. Profession and professional development
  2. Professionalism – influence, leadership and governance
  3. Self-awareness and Emotional Intelligence
  4. Social Responsibility and Ethical Decision-making

Part of the assessment will involve your reflections on professional and social responsibilities as they relate to your practice as health service manager. By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • discuss your self-development and professional development responsibilities as a health services leader
  • explain these responsibilities to develop others
  • apply knowledge and skills gained to develop, self, others, and the profession itself

On successful completion of the training, including the assessment, you will receive a credential digital badge. The digital badge will provide evidence that you have completed the training. It will also allow you to share and showcase the specific knowledge and skills you have gained to your employer, supervisor, peers and others.
