2 DAY STUDY TOUR: ROTORUA; (max 15 people)

Extend your conference experience by including this two day study tour option on your booking. This tour will provide the opportunity to experience a guided behind the scenes tour of these two innovative, inspiring and leading health facilities.

On Wednesday 13 March the group will depart from Auckland at 9.30am to Rotorua on a private coach. Following lunch in Rotorua, first stop on the tour is QE Health, Dr Thomas Armingeat from QE Health will lead the tour. QE Health is a place to recover, relax, and recharge. They are New Zealand’s only clinically integrated health and wellness centre, providing a complementary range of personalised clinical health services. Known as ‘He Whare Atawhai’ – A Place of Kindness’ QE Health has supported thousands on their journey to health and wellness since opening in 1942.

QE Health’s focus is not just physical health – but wellbeing inside and out, this philosophy aligns with the Maori health model ‘Te whare tapa wha’ which has four pillars: Taha tinana (physical health), Taha wairua (spiritual health), Taha whanau (family health), Taha hinengaro (mental health). With that focus in mind they provide a multi-disciplinary team approach – which enables their clients a variety of pathways to accommodate their needs. It’s this unique combination of clinical practice with natural therapies which allows them to provide the best possible treatment.

Following the visit to QE Health you will have the opportunity to visit Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa, which is located next door, where you can book in for a Restorative Journey experience (optional - please add this to your conference booking), then check-in to the hotel. Thursday evening group dinner will be at 'Eat Streat' walking distance from the hotel.

About: The Care Village, Rotorua

About: The Care Village:

The CARE Village is situated on the shores of Lake Rotorua. A greenfield build opportunity, combined with disquiet about the way care was designed and delivered in an institutional model, provided us with the opportunity to build an award-winning social relational household model of design and care delivery in New Zealand.  The CARE Village was inspired by de Hogewyk in the Netherlands. The CARE Village only provides care based on New Zealand lifestyles. We are not a retirement village. The CARE Village was the first to be built outside of the Netherlands. It took a team, courage, a clear vision and a MoH change of contract.

Based on small town NZ, there are 13 normal-sized houses with six residents from a similar  lifestyle living a normal life, most residents have dementia. Normal-sized dining rooms, kitchens, laundry. Residents recognise their surroundings. Residents participate in normal daily activities. Just like they would at home. A truly person-centred model.

Published AUT research by Dr Kay Shannon has demonstrated our residents are more peaceful and happier with limited BPSDs, despite advancing dementia. As one psycho-geriatrician described the village as ‘magic, pure magic’. It is hard to describe without visiting the transformation.

Therese Jeffs, a Chief Executive I had a dream to provide better care for those needing care, especially those living with dementia. It works clinically and financially.
