About the HMIP

The Health Management Internship Program (HMIP) offers committed, high-potential Interns the opportunity to develop the skills, competencies and knowledge required to start a career in managing the challenges and complexities of health service delivery.

Throughout the two years of the program, Management Interns are exposed to a variety of different workplace and educational opportunities.

While the program is administered independently by ACHSM Branches in states where it operates (currently NSW and Victoria) it has historically been known under different names in different states (such as Graduate Health Management Program or Management Residency Program).

HMIP is well-positioned to develop the middle management tier in the healthcare sector. Although the terms of each participating state’s program vary, HMIP focuses on key benefits for Health Management Interns, such as:

  • employment in a healthcare organisation with skills and knowledge acquired through supervised, structured workplace experience
  • an industry-recognised postgraduate academic qualification in health administration
  • first-hand access to support and mentoring opportunities as well as professional development and networking.

ACHSM has a strong history of supporting emerging health managers by developing and coordinating management internship programs, in great part thanks to its strong relationships with established placement organisations.
