HMIP NSW 1st year interns


Joana Andre Garrido

Joana is a 1st year Management Intern placed in the Bureau of Health Information. On her first year of placement she will be working in the Corporate Affairs and Business Development team.

Prior to the program, Joana completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences in 2017, with a major in Health Services Management and sub-major in Human Resources. Joana applied for the program to experience a wide variety of opportunities to enhance managerial skills and gain a broader understanding of the health sector.

In her downtime, Joana enjoys travelling to experience new cultures and going back home, to visit her family and friends.


Charlotte Davies 

Charlotte is a 1st year management intern commencing the program in 2018. She is placed with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District where she will rotate between Workforce Services, District Finance and Operations throughout her first year in the program. 

Charlotte graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Health Sciences majoring in Psychology. Since graduating she has worked in the community aged care sector coordinating Allied Health services for a diverse range of communities across Sydney. 

Charlotte is passionate about developing her knowledge of public healthcare both within Australia and internationally. She looks forward to developing her skills in management and leadership within the sector.

Samah Hassan

Sam is a 1st year Management Intern who commenced the program in 2018 with the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, she is currently based in Sutherland with the District Finance Team.

Sam completed a Bachelor of Health Science with a Major in Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Sydney in 2013. She has experience in operational management within the Transport and Logistics field and most recently in Clinical Support at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick.

Sam's motivation to be a part of HMIP comes from a passion for healthcare and its importance within communities. She recognises the opportunity to engage with and learn from the leaders and innovators within this space and is eager to develop her management and leadership skills. Outside of work you'll find Sam enjoying the great outdoors; camping, hiking, swimming or listening to live music.

Chad Leeuwenburgh

Chad is a 1st year management intern at the ACI, completing three rotations within Acute Care, Clinical Program Design and Implementations and Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care.

Chad holds a Masters in Health Management (UNSW), Masters in Medical Radiation Sciences (USYD) and a Bachelor Medical Radiation Sciences, Diagnostic (USYD). Chad recently completed the Clinical Leadership Program facilitated by the Area Health District he worked within. 

Previously, Chad worked as a radiographer (educator role extension) in a NSW metropolitan public hospital.

Chad applied for the HMIP seeing a unique opportunity to both apply and build upon his health management experience. Previous study has invoked a desire to contribute towards system based change, and contribute to his continued interest in health leadership. He has a passion towards facilitating engagement for frontline staff, recognising the critical contribution engaged staff make towards quality and compassionate patient care.  


Edward Valenta

Edward is a 1st year Management Intern commencing in 2017. His placement is at Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network, and he is currently working in the Communications Unit.

Edward obtained a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws at UNSW and has completed his Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at ANU. Edward will be admitted into the Legal Profession in April 2018.

He has worked in private, public and not-for profit organisations in areas such as tourism and hospitality, business, legal, disability and animal welfare advocacy. Edward looks forward to gaining experience and improving the healthcare system in Australia.

Edward enjoys travelling, spending time with family and catching up on the latest Netflix series.
